How to Open a Folder with .APP Extension on MacOS

If you have downloaded the files from cache servers which contain a folder named with a .app Extension (e.g. folder.app), you may get blocked and cannot open the folder. You will get an error that the file may be damaged or incomplete as in the screenshot below.

This issue arises in MacOs only. Users of other operating systems (windows and linux) can access the folder and files without any trouble.

The reason of this issue is MacOs uses .app extension for installed applications not for the folders. So, it considers the folder as an installed app and tries to run it.

To see the content of such a folder you can:

  • Rename the folder and remove the .app extension from it. (This may not work when .app is used twice in the name of folder ( e.g. folder.app.app )
  • Use other OS and rename to remove .app (or any) file extension given to the folder.
